Welcome

Carrshield Village Hall is part of Barney Craig Mineshop. It was built in the mid-18th century to house miners working in the local lead mines, and was once the largest of its kind in the region.

In 2017, at imminent risk of collapsing beyond repair, the building was gifted to Allen Valleys Enterprise by Allendale Estates. The building was renovated as part of the North Pennines AONB’s Lottery-Funded Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme, with a grand opening in December 2018. Find out more about its history here.

The first floor of the building (accessible from the ground floor at the rear) has been converted into a simple camping barn – you can find out how to book rooms in the camping barn here.

The Centre now offers a main hall and a kitchen/meeting room for use by the local community. There is also a pottery studio on site.
